Project Description

Redevelopment of the Kakabeka Falls GS will consist of the following upgrades to the station:

• Maintenance of the existing powerhouse in its original location, with the addition of a new powerhouse “extension” located immediately upstream of the existing powerhouse.
• Removal of the four existing turbine generation units and ancillary equipment.
• Within the new powerhouse, installation of two new Francis type turbines.
• A new powerhouse crane to bused for installation and future maintenance of the equipment.
• Replace existing surge tank building.
• Remove the four existing four penstocks and replace with two new penstocks.
• No work is proposed at the intake structure but gate controls may be modified.
• To accommodate the interconnection between the aqueduct and the new surge tank the demolition of existing concrete transition from the aqueduct to the existing surge tank is required. Then a new section of aqueduct or new transition structure between downstream end of existing aqueduct and new surge tank will be constructed.
